Violet took a long, deep breath in and then grinned at Demi. The woman looked entirely unimpressed and unmoved.

“Let me stop you right there,” Demi said. “I want to go back to England. I’d appreciate help getting a start there.”

“We can do that,” Denny said easily with the confidence of a person who knew that it would be the others who actually helped.

“We will do that,” Violet told her. “But right now, my friend seems to think that your cousin and her husband are involved.”

“We do?” Denny asked.

“He does,” Violet said, eyeing Denny fiercely and trying to mentally convey Smith did, but they didn’t trust Demi.

Slow comprehension moved over Denny’s face, getting both messages. They weren’t going to reveal anything about Smith and they didn’t necessarily trust Demi. They probably should have discussed that before going to find her.

“Tell us about your cousin,” Denny prompted, managing to keep his voice straight.

“She doesn’t love her husband.” Demi’s voice was flat and convinced. “His money, his power, the excitement of being around him, but not him. My cousin believes her own lies. You can’t trust her.”

Violet didn’t laugh even though the statement deserved it.

Instead, she considered. It wasn’t that she disbelieved Demi. Violet didn’t think that anyone tortured her husband the way that she’d seen Mrs. Accetta play with hers and still love him. Mrs. Accetta had seemed like a cat with a mouse, and cats might love mice, but they were disposable all the same.

“So what is your plan to find what happened to this Martin?” Demi asked.

“We thought we’d take some books back to your cousin and—”

Demi tuned out after Vi mentioned books and her cousin. Vi could tell. Why did she not care? A sudden idea occurred to Vi and she found herself asking the question before she thought better of it. “Did you used to be her mouse?”

“What?” Demi asked, dark brown eyes wide and confused. “Are you feeling ill?”

Vi shook her head. “Never mind. My thoughts are scattered.”

“I imagine finding a body does make you feel lost,” Demi suggested, having no idea just how many times Violet and her friends had been pulled into situations like this one. “I don’t understand why it makes you want to be involved or why you’re fixated on my cousin. Ismena certainly has never done anything for herself that someone else can do for her.”

Violet lifted a brow. There was rather a lot of hatred in that tone. Was Demi aware of how she seethed with fury against her cousin? Violet paused and then realized Demi was trading rather a lot to go to a place that her cousin could have easily taken her.

“Why didn’t the Accettas take you to London?”

Demi laughed bitterly. “Because if she doesn’t let me leave, then her mother has someone to order around and my aunt has a caregiver to look after her.”

“Is that where you’re supposed to be?” Denny asked curiously. He frowned. “Surely your cousin can pay for someone to look after her mother.”

“Of course she can.
